Jan’s core practice centers on environmental law in the broadest sense of the word, including regulatory (chemicals, electrical devices, hazardous substances, etc.), climate change, emission rights and renewable energy, EIA, waste and soil, water, air, and nature conservation at all levels (international, European and Belgian). Moreover, he has a broad expertise regarding project development, permits, planning and zoning, expropriation, and nuclear law. Jan also has a wealth of experience in drafting, adapting and interpreting laws and regulatory texts for public authorities at federal and regional levels. In addition, he handles cases concerning human rights (ECHR), constitutional law and general administrative law.
He is the author of various publications on his areas of expertise and a regular guest speaker at seminars and conferences.
Jan is a member of the executive board of several Flemish associations, including Vlaamse Vereniging voor Omgevingsrecht (VVOR, association for Environmental and Planning Law) and the Stichting Behoud Natuur en Leefmilieu Vlaanderen (SBNLV, association for nature conservation). In addition, he is a member of the editorial staff of legal journals such as Chroniques de Droit Public – Publiekrechtelijke Kronieken C.D.P.K. (journal of public law chronicles), Tijdschrift voor Ruimtelijke Ordening en Stedenbouw (TROS, Flemish journal devoted to zoning and planning issues) and Tijdschrift voor Stedenbouw, Omgeving, Ruimtelijke Ordening en Milieu (STORM, journal devoted to environment, zoning and planning).
Jan graduated in Law from Ghent University in 1989 and in European Law from Université libre de Bruxelles in 1990. He joined the Brussels office of Stibbe in 1994.
