Frederik combines a unique expertise in energy law and public law, which he masters from both a practical and academic perspective.
With regard to public law, Frederik is particularly known for his exceptional expertise in public economic law, including public restructurings, public companies, hospitals and public financing (including subsidies). Over the years, he has also developed a strong expertise regarding procurement law and the division of competences in Belgium. Moreover, he has experience in drafting laws and regulatory texts for public authorities, at all levels in Belgium.
Regarding energy law, Frederik mostly focuses on energy contracts and the regulatory framework applicable to the energy sector. He has experience with on- and offshore renewable energy projects, energy efficiency projects, grid operation and construction, pipelines, nuclear energy, energy commodity trading, CO2 emission trading, and the EU Emissions Trading System (ETS).
In both areas of law, he represents clients in contentious procedures before all types of courts such as the Council of State, the Constitutional Court and the civil courts. His clients belong to a wide range of sectors such as energy, health care, transport and utilities.
Frederik is the author of various publications on his areas of expertise and a regular guest speaker at seminars and conferences. He is also a professor in public law and energy law at Ghent University (where he obtained his doctoral degree with a thesis on the legal framework of public legal entities).
Frederik joined the Brussels office of Stibbe in 1997.
