Specialising in environmental law, Valérie handles complex matters related to ESG, climate change and environmental impact, the energy transition, circularity, the (new) Omgevingswet (Environment and Planning Act), and supervision and enforcement.
Specialising in environmental law, Valérie handles complex matters related to ESG, climate change and environmental impact, the energy transition, circularity, the (new) Omgevingswet (Environment and Planning Act), and supervision and enforcement.
Valérie acts as trusted advisor and legal counsel for clients in industry and production, energy & utilities, real estate & project development, aviation, transportation & mobility, public bodies, municipalities and provinces, and many other industries. She navigates her clients through the complex regulatory landscape and advises businesses and startups on the legal aspects of the challenges they encounter when working towards more sustainable business operations.
She has many years of experience in the following fields, among others:
- permissions for various activities
- environment and planning
- environmental impact
- nature conservation
- waste management, recycling and circularity
- compliance with national and European regulations and guidelines
- emission trading systems
- renewable energy
- negotiations with and supervision and enforcement by government bodies and other public authorities
- disputes that are brought before the court
Together with Heleen Kersten, Valérie co-chairs the Stibbe ESG & Sustainability focus group, a cross-practice team bringing together Stibbe's experts in order to provide clients with guidance and advice on all legal aspects of ESG and sustainability matters.
Valérie is the annotator of the environmental law magazine Milieu & Recht, a board member of the Environment Law Association (VMR) and chair of the Environmental Lawyers Association (VMA). She regularly contributes to publications such as Tekst & Commentaar Omgevingswet, Handboek Omgevingswet and other books and journals.
She has a master’s degree in Dutch private and administrative law (2000) and a PhD in environmental law (2005) from Utrecht University. She teaches environmental law at Utrecht University.
