Erik Valgaeren
Erik specialises in legislation and regulations regarding IT, internet, e-commerce, e-communications, privacy, digitisation and new technologies. He also has a wealth of experience in all intellectual property aspects of the aforementioned specialisations and a thorough knowledge of the technical aspects relating to communication.

In addition to providing legal advice on legislation and regulations, Erik drafts contracts and handles projects concerning web services, outsourcing, cloud services, system integration, software implementation, data management and privacy, artificial intelligence and innovation partnerships. In the field of communications law, Erik advises both traditional telecom operators and suppliers of infrastructure services and new media and social network services. He also litigates before courts and arbitral tribunals. Erik has extensive experience in arbitration and is regularly involved as an arbitrator for Cepina.
In 2020, Erik was appointed by the Council of the Dutch Brussels Bar as a third-party ruler under the “Binding third-party ruling” regulations. He is a member of the editorial staff of Computerrecht, the Belgian-Dutch law journal of Kluwer on ICT, and a member of the Technology Committee of the International Bar Association. Furthermore, he is a member of Beltug, the Belgian Association of Digital Technology leaders and board member of the Order of Flemish Bars (OVB) where he is responsible for digitalisation and GDPR. In addition, Erik is the author of various publications on his areas of expertise and a regular guest speaker at seminars and conferences.
Erik holds a master's degree in Law from KU Leuven and an LL.M. from the University of Chicago. He also obtained a postgraduate degree in Data Analytics from KU Leuven and completed the master’s programme in Computer Management at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel. Erik was a visiting professor for ICT law at Solvay Brussels School for five years and a visiting professor for internet law at the University of Luxembourg for four years. He was also a guest lecturer in blockchain and smart contracts at KU Leuven from 2018 to 2020.
He joined the Brussels office of Stibbe in 1993.
