The Minister of Infrastructure and Water Management officially opened the first lanes of the Gaasperdammertunnel on the A9 in Amsterdam-Zuidoost on 5 July. The Gaasperdammertunnel forms part of the PPP SAA A9 Gaasperdammerweg roads project.

Stibbe advised Ballast Nedam, Heijmans, Fluor and 3i (the sponsors) in connection with the Design, Build, Financing and 20-year Maintenance (DBFM) of the PPP SAA A9 Gaasperdammerweg roads project. Financial close was achieved in 2014. Stibbe has continued to advise the sponsors in connection with the project up to the opening.

The project consisted of all work in connection with the reconstruction and expansion of the A9 motorway between the junctions of Holendrecht and Diemen in the region of Amsterdam (including the bridge over the river Gaasp) the road surface on the A9 Gaasperdammerweg, and the construction of what is termed a ‘land tunnel’, named the Gaasperdammertunnel. A park will be built on the roof of this tunnel, which will connect the various districts in Amsterdam Zuidoost. This park will be twice the size of the Vondelpark, making it the largest park in Amsterdam.

The SAA A9 Gaasperdammerweg roads project is the penultimate part of the large-scale renovation of the motorway corridor between Schiphol Airport and Almere - a mega-project involving a total of over €5 billion.
