Stibbe assisted BSTOR, a Belgian company specialising in the development and financing of utility-scale battery energy storage parks, in launching ESTOR-LUX II—a 100 MW / 270 MWh battery energy storage park in Aubange, Belgium—scheduled to be operational by autumn 2026.

The project recently began construction and is located in the industrial zone of Aubange, in the province of Luxembourg, near an Elia high-voltage substation. With a storage capacity of 270 MWh, ESTOR-LUX II is over ten times the size of ESTOR-LUX I, Belgium’s first large-capacity battery storage park developed by the same consortium.

This €124 million project is backed by a consortium composed of BSTOR (75%), SOCOFE (15%), and SOPAER (10%), and is financed 65% through non-recourse debt provided by KBC, Belfius, and Triodos Bank. The remaining 35% is covered by equity.

ESTOR-LUX II will consist of 70 lithium-ion battery containers, each with a capacity of 3.8 MWh. The park will provide essential grid flexibility to accommodate the increasing share of renewable energy and will be operated in the market by energy supplier Eneco.

Stibbe provided comprehensive legal support to BSTOR on all development aspects of the project.
